I had heard who the country is dangerous, especially with the influx of vacationers and all the Mayan doomsday prediction, before coming in Guatemala. I advised them I was really interested in arranging a media trip, and contacted INGUAT, the Guatemalan tourism board. I never asked myself”Is Guatemala dangerous?”
In a nutshell
I was more than excited, but my feelings of happiness soon turned into,”what have I gotten myself into?” I had read about with gang members from backpackers, so obviously I was apprehensive about my forthcoming trip. My family didn’t help to qualm my concerns- they were also mad I had determined to do the trip regardless of hazards.
I was also invited by the El Salvadorian tourism board into their country soon after I ordered Guatemala. I believed it would be best to kill 2 birds with one stone (no pun intended) while I was in Central America. I flew from Miami and took the leap of faith a few months back. Following landing, I quickly realized that everything I ruminated around for months and learned was completely wrong.
Guatemala city, like any city, has its tough areas and streets that are dangerous. But I will tell you with certainty that it is secure after seeing a lot of it and a historical place to visit. Considerations do must be obtained – do not walk through the night alone and always listen to your stomach (and your manual or driver if you have one.)
Stressing is nearly inevitable like traveling into any city using a bad-rap. However, being smart and aware of your environment is the battle in staying secure and making certain that your trip is one you will not ever forget. My main concern was my equipment. I travel with various cameras that are expensive which I did not wish to go stolen. I nixed my belt clips and then pulled onto a back pack to conceal my things rather. It functioned perfectly and I had zero attention to my own cameras.
Everything I had worried about has been so far from the reality. The people are warm and friendly. The streets are buzzing with people on their everyday errands. Similar to any other city on Earth, Guatemala City has its highs and lows. Play it smart, so do not flash camera your opinion or any other item you’re touring with, and most probably be polite. 1 thing in life I have discovered is that if you do not take risks, you will rarely get pay-offs. Traveling via Guatemala continues to be one of my trips far and I’d recommend you visit, but always having a manual. In addition, I suggest reading travel advisories that are significant . To answer the questions”Is Guatemala dangerous?” I’d say not more dangerous than any other country, you have to use common sense.
Particular thanks to Its Guatemala Toursim Organization.
